PJS Elections are not Recognized
Saturday, February 27th 2010 – Cairo – Journalistic sources in Cairo said on Saturday 27 Feb 2010 that the Federation of Arab Journalists refuses to recognize the election results that the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, (PJS) which took place two weeks ago in the West Bank city of Ramallah, but without including the colleagues of the Gaza Strip. The sources said: “FAJ received the detailed report on what happened in the PJS elections in Ramallah, which revealed many illegal abuses, which marred the elections”.
The sources also noted that “The Federation of Arab Journalists told the Palestinian officials in Ramallah about its stance, in which they stressed that they only recognize the old PJS council which has not submitted its resignation so far in a way consistent with the laws, in order to be able to call for a new election”. According to these sources from Cairo, the investigation leads to results which confirm that “many of those who were announced winners in the board elections, which saw a high level of political intervention from the PA, were not members of the PJS, including some people who have nothing at all to do with media work, or with journalism “.
The FAJ report stressed that “some Palestinian politicians (meaning Tawfiq Al-Tirawi and Tayeb Abed Al-Rahim) dealt with the union and its elections as if it were a government institution and not an independent syndicate. This touched on the integrity of the electoral process, which was boycotted by human rights organizations and the institutions of the civil society.”
