The Murder of an Arab Woman in EU
[Note: This article will be published in the magazine of the International Network of Journalists which is financed by the EU through the IEMED in Barcelona].
There are many people who abuse the family laws in Austria. Young men from Arab countries come to Europe in a gold-rush mood, and many of them go to brothels looking for a “wife”, a woman who will engage with them, in a sham marriage in order to receive a European nationality. Others marry women who could be their mothers or grandmothers. After they receive the nationality, these young Arab men divorce their Austrian “wives”, and soon marry a woman from their country of origin, whom they bring into the country using the family laws, which allow for family “reunification”. In Austria, the authorities deem as suspicious almost any marriage between an Austrian national and a foreigner since years, what hints at the extent of the abuse of the hospitality of this country being perpetrated by these “gold diggers”.
This is a tragedy if we take into account that the majority of the youths who come here looking for a European nationality do not respecting the European society, and could not care less about the values and customs of the European people, and they have no sense of belonging into the European community and its culture. They live in Europe, but in ghettos which are copies of their origin countries. In these origin countries and societies, discrimination and violence against females are a fix part of the structure and customs.
These people do not only damage themselves and their direct victims with their irresponsible actions and their lack of interest in their host countries, but they abuse the welcome which foreigners have been granted in these countries, and they also dirty the image of the communities of Arabs and Muslims in these countries who have decided to integrate. They offend the reputation of the many Arabs by way of education have reached high levels in the Austrian society. They are in the parliament, in medicine, engineering, technology, religion, politics, arts, universities, education, etc. Why should we defend these people who offend our reputation us as somebody commits an irresponsible action?
In Europe, specifically in Austria, violence and crimes against Arab women are not really of interest to the public opinion and the media, with exception of those cases when bloody tragedies transcend into public knowledge. It is seldom that the TV raises discussions about this issue, and the Austrian authorities, the Human Rights institutions, do not pay enough attention to this serious issue which threatens the structure of Austrian society. Because of this, the violence against Arab and foreign women remains largely unknown, and hidden, in Europe.
On last January 15 2010, an Egyptian woman was murdered in Vienna. The victim was 32 years old and the mother of a child of two years. According to the Austrian police, the killer was her husband. The victim had previously been subjected to physical violence by her husband; she had presented several complaints with the police in Vienna, and her husband had been banned from the flat.
During a previous attempt of an Islamic committee to effect a reconciliation of the couple, Mr. YY attempted to beat her before this committee, what caused Mrs. XX to tell her husband that “if I was married to a dog, he would treat me better than you”. According to my information, the problems between Mrs. XX and her husband were caused by him bringing girls to have sex in the couple’s bed, while she was present.
Mr. YY, the husband of Mrs. XX, was divorced from an Austrian woman, with whom he had two children, AA, a boy of age 12, and NN, a girl of age 16. NN was transferred to live in Egypt with his parents when she was 8, and she probably did not understand why her father left her in Egypt to live with the people who she did not know how communicate with. Why did Mr. YY not send his little boy AA to live with his sister in Egypt, or did the gender of the girl have anything to do with this decision?
- Did the Father had sent his daughter to Egypt because she is a female, as I was told?
- Does the father really believe that the Austrian society is not a good place for raising a female child, as I was told?
- If this was the reason, then why did the father, Mr. YY, come to Austria, and why did he stay?
- Why does he not renounce the Austrian nationality and return home to Egypt?
It is in my view a shame and utter disrespect towards all Austrians to live in this country, to receive the benefits from all of its many services, even to apply for and receive the citizenship, and then turn around and send the daughter away because this society is supposedly not appropriate for raising a girl.
It is difficult to imagine the psychological suffer of a girl raised in Austria, who is then sent to live in Egypt, where gender discrimination and violence against females are part of the structure and customs of family and society. Furthermore, in Egypt foreign females are often treated not better than slaves.
If the family of Mr. YY was such an ideal place for raising children, then why did he become a murderer instead of an engineer, or an idealist?
The further consequences of this tragedy are in themselves alarming. In the wake of the murder of Mrs. XX, her family has threatened to exact revenge and reprisals from the family of the murder. This spells danger for NN, the daughter of Mr. YY, as she is not only the daughter of the murderer, but a foreign female living with the family in Egypt.
In relation to this issue, I asked the spokesperson of the Viennese police if he could confirm that NN, who is presumed to be an Austrian national, is still alive and actually lives in Egypt, and if her security is guaranteed, taking in account the threat of revenge by the family of the victim. According to the police, the girl is alive and well, and that her mother is in constant contact with her. The police also stated that the Viennese youth authority (Jugendamt) has been noticed in regards to this issue. The statement of the police spokesperson follows below.
Sehr geehrte Frau Salam,
herzlichst
Roman Hahslinger

Are the views of this “journalist” compatible with Austria?
As disgusting as the murder of Mrs. XX and the surrounding circumstances are, the reaction of certain self-professed Egyptian journalists in Vienna is shocking to say the least.
Mr. YY is described as “a gentleman, generous, shy and striving for the general good, able to keep a space of respect and affection between him and ex-wife which guaranteed that both of them could take care of their children”.
- How can a person with a history of family violence, of beating his wife, who was barred from the conjugal flat, who brought women home to do things repugnant to his wife, be described as being good with others?
- Is this schizophrenia?
- What would happen if a woman brings strange men to her husband’s bed? Would he stay quite while looking at his wife and such a “guest” in bed? What would happen if a married woman kept a space for (affection) with her ex-husband? Would the current husband congratulate such a behavior of his wife?
This journalist also blamed the victim, Mrs. XX by actually saying “I do not know if the wife XX has adopted the golden protocol (meaning the Austrian law) to get rid of her husband. The important thing was that the wife quarreled with her husband and contacted the Police, who decided (routinely) to keep the husband out of house for 10 days”.
This misogynist “journalist” did of course not mention that the victim had been subject to several physical assaults at the hands of her husband before she called the police to protect her. Neither did he mention the repugnant behavior of the husband, Mr. YY, or the fact that, as I was told, he had married this woman and brought her from Egypt in order to use her as a servant.
Another passage in the disgusting “report” of this self-anointed “journalist”: “The husband returned on Friday afternoon, 15 January 2010, to communicate and admonish his wife, but Mrs. XX screamed instead. The husband tried to make her silence, and she kept silence. After that he took his daughter and went to his ex-wife driving his red Mercedes … The ex-wife took the keys from Mr. YY and went to see the Mrs. XX. She found her dead, and she called the police. We wish Mr. YY that God stay with him in his distress, we ask God for his forgiveness, compassion and consolation”.
The report contained the picture of a smiling young man, as if he was looking for a bride. Obviously, there is no sense of shame over the murder of a wife among many Egyptians.
Questions to the Journalist
- My question to this “journalist”: If Mr. YY did not intend to kill his wife, if he did not know that his wife was dead, then why suffocate her by closing her nose and mouth, as the autopsy revealed?
- Why he did not call the ambulance when she fell to the floor?
- Why did he take his small daughter and go to his ex-wife?
- Why did he give the keys of his apartment to the ex-wife, with instructions to see if Mrs. XX was OK?
According to the suspicion communicated to me by my sources, Mr. YY gave his ex-wife the keys to his apartment, where he had left his wife dead, because he calculated that the ex-wife would leave fingerprints on the body of the victim when touching her or trying to wake her up, thus incriminating herself. He sent her with bad will and intent.
I can only say that the perpetrator and this reporter betray a deep misogyny, and they obviously share a mentality which deems it OK to kill a wife and to attempt to incriminate an ex-wife instead of finding such conduct disgusting in the extreme. Having seen too many senseless crimes against women.
I can only hope that the killer gets what he deserves.
