Flotilla Costs MK Al-Zoubi Parliamentarian Privileges
Monday – June 7 2010 – With a majority of seven Knesset members and the opposition of one, the Knesset committee on Parliamentarian privileges under direction of MK Ilan Gilon (Meretz) recommended that certain privileges of the Arab-Israeli MK Haneen Al-Zoubi be withdrawn in the wake of her participation on the freedom flotilla aimed at breaking the siege of the Gaza strip. The decision was submitted to the General Authority of the Knesset.
The Committee issued the offensive recommendation to withdraw three privileges from Al-Zoubi. These rights are usually granted to all Knesset Members. The three recommendations are:
- First, Al-Zoubi is forbidden to leave the country “to implement offenses” against Israel. (This means: By force Al-Zoubi is not allowed to join humanitarian events or to expose further details about the criminal commando attack on the Flotilla or other atrocities in speeches and lectures out of Israel).
- The second privilege to be withdrawn is her diplomatic passport, which all Parliamentarians receive.
- The third privilege to be withdrawn is her right to have her legal expenses covered by the Knesset if she is put on trial.
Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin said that the Al-Zoubi issue would be discussed next week during the Knesset session. He added that they want to study the decision and ask the Knesset legal advisor about it.
MK Al-Zoubi has been subjected to a campaign of incitement by the MKs of the extremist Likudfaction, who recommended to put her on trial as a terrorist and to declare the Arab-Israeli National Democratic Alliance, which Al-Zoubi belongs to, out of the law. She has also been called “bitch”, “whore” and other obscene and harsh words, which the head of the committee Yaron Levin ordered deleted from the record of the meeting.
